| The island continent of Australia features a wide range of climatic zones, from the tropical regions of the north through the arid expanses of the interior, to the temperate regions of the south. This variety of climatic conditions allows skiing in the winter months near the southern alpine regions and swimming and snorkeling in the northern parts of Australia. However, in the tropical north of Australia, the seasons are characterized by wet and dry, the wet season being in December, January and February, when the rest of Australia is enjoying summer. |

 Australia is the only continent occupied entirely by one nation. Australia is the sixth largest country in the world, and it is only a little smaller than the continental United States, at 7,700,000 square kilometers (2,970,000 square miles). Australia spans 3,700 kilometers (2,294 miles) from north to south and 4,000 kilometers (2,480 miles) from east to west. The seasons are the reverse of those in the Northern hemisphere. |

The History |

| Permanent European settlement began in 1788 in the form of a British colony. A federation (the Commonwealth) formed in 1901 by written constitution, and now comprises six states (New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia). The commonwealth has two territories on the mainland, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory, both of which are self-governing. Australia also has seven external territories under its administration, which include Norfolk Island. |

 The current population of Australia is approximately 20.76 million and is growing at a rate of 1% each year. More than 85% of all households live in urban areas, mostly along the coastal regions. Sydney is the largest city in Australia, with 6 million people. Forty percent of all people live in Sydney and Melbourne. Approximately 1/3 of all Australians are younger than 20 years, accounting for a very young population. |
